From Central City Value to Champion of Justice: Roxana Martinez's Journey to Law School

Roxana, Central City Value class of 2012; UCLA, Southwestern Law SchoolRoxana Martinez’s journey to law school was shaped by sacrifice and determination, nurtured at Central City Value High School. Raised by a single mother from Oaxaca, Mexico, Roxana witnessed her mother’s sacrifices firsthand, fueling her own aspirations. With unwavering support from Central City Value, Roxana learned the value of hard work and self-confidence.

Central City Value teachers set high expectations for Roxana, and their belief in her capabilities instilled confidence as she embarked on her law school journey. She graduated in 2012 and was awarded the Chairman’s Scholarship. The grant covered expenses that helped her as she made her way through UCLA.

Influenced by the disparities she experienced growing up, Roxana majored in political science and Chicano studies at UCLA. Her minor in Labor and Workplace Studies bridged personal experiences with academic pursuits, solidifying her passion for advocating for workers’ rights.

While working full time as an admissions counselor, Roxana began her law school journey in 2020, seeking financial independence to avoid burdensome loans. Her resilience was evident as she managed demanding schedules and made the necessary sacrifices.

Central City Value laid the foundation for Roxana’s law school success, nurturing her confidence. Mr. Arroyo, Principal of Central City Value, encouraged her pursue her dream of being an attorney, even when her own family members were unaware of her aspirations.

As Roxana works toward her law degree, she demonstrates the values by championing workers’ rights and improving the lives of people within our community.
